Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, everybody has some responsibility for Occupational Health & Safety. This Act places a general duty on employers to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all their employees.

It is unlawful to discriminate against a person on the basis of their sex (including pregnancy), race, sexuality, marital status, disability, age, carer's responsibilities or transgender status. but complanints of sexual harassment are one of the Board's most common complaints. Most people think of sexual harassment as only physical handling or touching, but it also includes suggestive comments, displaying offensive images, relaying of offensive stories or jokes and making personal comments about a person's clothing or appearance, as well as actual physical approach. emails that feature offensive text of images are also considered sexual harassment.

EMPLOYEE (ON-HIRE CASUAL) RECOMMENDATIONS:

Computer workstation set-up
On assignment an On-Hire Casual will spend many hours using a variety of keyboard equipment. Where practical they shall follow these guidelines to set-up their work area to suite individual needs.

Work surface height
Adjust the height of the work surface and/or the chair so it is at finger length below the height of the elbow when seated.

Chair
Adjust the seat tilt so that it is comfortable when using the keyboard. Adjust the backrest to support the lower back.

Posture and movement
Change posture at frequent intervals to minimise fatigue. take frequent short rests instead of infrequent long rests, this is especially relevant to call centre or customer centre staff. Ensure that every hour an employee is able to get up and walk around to relieve muscle and eye strain.
Keyboard placement
Place the keyboard in a position that allows the forearms to be close to horizontal and the wrists to be straight. that is with the hand in line with the forearm.

Glare and reflection
Tilt the screen so that relections are directed below eye level If available an antiglare screen is helpful.

Screen placement
Set the eye to screen distance at the distance that permits easy focus on the screen. Usually this will be within an arms length. Set the height of the monitor so that the top of the screen is below eye level and bottom of the screen can be read without a marked inclination of the head. Usually this means that the centre of the screen will need to be near shoulder height.

Document holder
This is placed close to the monitor screen in a position that causes the least twisting or inclination of the head.
